We will admit when you think of the word sexy, central station monitoring probably does not rank anywhere close to your top 10. For decades it has been a core component of the service alarm companies offer their customers, but one they more than likely took for granted.

We have come a long way from green computer screens, and the services available to you and your customers today present tremendous opportunities. How do you evaluate your central station, or more importantly how do you identify the best station for you and your customers in a very crowded marketplace? Your central station must be offering you the very best technology available. If your central station partner isn’t offering new and leading edge technology they are putting you at a disadvantage to some of your competition. Can they completely and absolutely customize the monitoring experience to exactly meet your customer’s needs?

As we see our industry embrace more technology, the commitment of your central station to evolve is more important than ever. If they are not making the investment in technology, then they are refusing to invest in your partnership together.


Does your central station offer you a great value? We carefully choose the word value because it is very different than price or cost. A truly great central station cannot be the low price leader and you do not want them to be. However, this does not mean they should charge you a premium price that is not in line with the market or your size of company. Customers and competition largely dictate the RMR you can generate from a customer. The more you pay for monitoring services the less profit is available to grow your business. You should also be careful to not make your decision simply upon the base rate. Many central stations have been effective at increasing their average RMR by surcharging their dealers for everything they can think of. The details matter and they will cost you. Pay special attention to their fees and policies.

Thankfully you can have all of the best technology and pay very competitive rates if you choose the right partner. When evaluating your current or future monitoring partners, make sure value is a key driver of your decision making.


Finally, but most importantly it still comes down to people. While world class technology is the price of entry it really won’t help you if the people on the other end are not interested in your success. Your team needs to work with a partner whose sole mission is to support you and help you each and every day. Does your central station resolve your issues immediately or do you have to wait for days to get an answer? Does your partner offer advice and assistance to help make you more efficient and more profitable? Is your central station simply cashing your checks and coasting? You simply cannot reach your absolute potential in this industry without a strong central station partner who cares and is there to help you every single time you need it.
